EPILEPSY COUNCIL MALAYSIA,

MALAYSIAN SOCIETY OF NEUROSCIENCES.

The Epilepsy Council Malaysia was formed in February 2002, as a Chapter of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences. It is affiliated to the International League of Epilepsy.

The objectives of the Council are to:
Promote education and training of health professionals in the care of epilepsy patients
Promote research in epilepsy
Continue to improve care in epilepsy management.

Activities identified are:
Publishing guidelines and recommendations on epilepsy
Organising professional meetings and conferences on epilepsy
Constructing a curriculum for post-graduate training in epileptology
Recognising or certifying specialists in epileptology
Advising the Government on epilepsy and epilepsy-related issues
Initiating and coordinating research related to epilepsy to collaborate with the Malaysian Epilepsy Society (affiliated to IBE) and other organistaions on related epilepsy issues.

From 2002-2004, the Council has been running an Awareness programme on Epilepsy for Paramedics, on a nationwide basis, with members of the council taking turns to give talks and run a workshop for nurses and medical assistants as well as junior doctors in each state. The Council will also shortly be publishing a Consensus Guidelines on the Management of Epilepsy. Research activities have also been identified. The Council also works together with the Malaysian Society for Epilepsy on areas of common ground.
